This post was going to be about my day from hell where I spent the time apologising from the moment I got up. That’s coming. In the meantime the gauntlet has been thrown down.
Wesley and I have been discussing the pronunciation of particular words, acknowledging for the most part the differences in the cultures and the pronunciations. Except for one word which has befuddled us. Amusingly the word macrame has got us at friendly loggerheads. How did you pronounce that in your head? MackRuhMay or MahCrahMay? Wesley does the former, I, being correct, do the latter. Interestingly we’re both stubborn enough not to give in. heh. Also my rationale is I am from England therefore my pronunciation is thus genetically correct. Bow to me, Thompson.
Answers in the replies please. And as a decider, if you can find a dictionary website from the UK (ie .org.uk) thathas an audio that pronounces it MackRuhMay I will concede to Wesley. I’ve no idea what the winner gets. I’d quite like his car. I don’t think I have anything he wants though. Actually one thing now that I think about it….HA!

It got caught in the spam filters, buddy, hence the delay in it appearing. MackRAYM….. wow… at least we agree on that one.
I attempted to cut and paste some .uk web sites here, but it was disallowed by wordpress. I shall have to let you listen to them later. Apparently britain has yet a third pronunciation for macrame.
Of course I am gonna win, ya know.
Oh! It’s on buddy. It’s on. Winner takes all.
I generally pronounce it UGly. But that’s just me.
Oh Nicola, that made me laugh and laugh but wasn’t HELPFUL! I was expecting you to be the tie-breaker to be honest.
Well sorry J Wesley and Nigel, I say mac- ram-ee. BUT when I am doing my “I am a lady” impersonation from Little Britain, I do say Mac rah may !!!!! So it appears I am no help either.I love it though.Good luck on your quest guys
I say Mack rah may. I made a macrame plant holder once, so I’m pretty sure I say it correctly.
Shall I settle this once and for all with the proper Arabic pronounciation of this Persian word that got bastardized by the English? Just like Peking = Beijing, Bombay = Mumbai; English mispronounciations and subsequently corrected………..
I’ll allow a draw though – you know Poh-ta-toe, puh-tah-toe, hell we call ’em taters.
Do you know i was prepared to let this drop. Then i met an American who pronounced Coriander amusingly so much so I thought it was a new herb… I will check that out on you.
